This is an image of a motion-sensing neuron in the fruit fly visual system. As the fly moves, images of its environment move across its eyes. These cells respond to this motion, giving the fly information that allows it to navigate and respond to its environment. We used an advanced genetic marking technique to label the surface of the cell with a red fluorescent protein, and the excitatory connections between neurons with a green fluorescent protein, which appears as yellow due to co-existence with the red protein. The blue color is from surrounding nerve tissues.
