Strangers in the Night

Meredith Collins, Graduate Student (Pasca di Magliano Laboratory), Cell and Molecular Biology Program, University of Michigan Medical School

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most deadly cancers. Early growth of the tumor can be symptom-free so that by the time the diagnosis of cancer is made, the tumor is very advanced. This image shows two pancreatic cancer cells undergoing cell death following treatment with a chemotherapeutic drug that blocks survival signals within the cell. The edges of the cells take on a frayed appearance, and the nuclei (bright blue areas) have started to break down. Our laboratory models pancreatic cancer in mouse models to learn how to improve early detection and effective treatment of this vicious disease.
