Brain tumors are the most common form of cancer and the leading cause of death in in people under the age of 20. Treatment modalities include surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy, though immunotherapies (in which the body’s own immune system is stimulated to kill tumor cells) are now being tested.  Common to all of these treatments is the need to carefully evaluate how effectively the tumor cells are being targeted and killed. This is a mouse model in which invasion of brain tumor cells, labelled in blue, into normal brain structures can be followed. The nuclei of the tumor cells are labelled in red; when this red stain exits the nucleus, and localizes to the cytoplasm, it indicates that the tumor cells are dying.
